Department of Psychiatry
The Department consists of 20 full-time adult psychiatrists, 5 full-time child psychiatrists, 4 psychologists, 5 nurse practitioners. The Department:
Staffs and operates two acute-care psychiatric hospitals with a total of 190 beds – the second largest number of behavioral health beds in Arizona, after the Arizona State Hospital.
Operates an outpatient psychiatric clinic.
Staffs a full-time psychiatric consultation/liaison service and ECT service.
Provides outpatient clinical care in community treatment settings.
Partnering with Value Options, the Department has developed an innovative outpatient court-ordered evaluation and treatment renewal process. This avoids the stress and expense of re-hospitalizing patients in need of a court order for mental health treatment.
In partnership with the court system, they have developed alternatives for mentally ill criminal defendants, and have presented on this model system nationally. They have child psychiatrists providing care in jail facilities, juvenile probation facilities and other settings.
Another program developed by the Department allows its physicians to treat seriously mentally ill patients in residential treatment programs, working with these patients and their caregivers to change persistent negative behaviors.
